Dave Courtney, a former London criminal who turned entertainer, has died at the age of 64. He was found dead at his home in Plumstead on Sunday. A post on his Instagram account said he "ended his own life".
Courtney was a controversial figure, but he was also a talented writer and entertainer. He wrote six books and starred in a film called Damnation To Pay. He was also said to be the inspiration for the character of Vinnie Jones' character "Huge Chris" in the film Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels.
In a statement, Courtney's family said he lived "a staggering, brilliant rowdy 'life where he contacted the hearts of so many".
"The actual aggravation of carrying on with the way of life he picked, particularly because of the aggravation of both disease and joint pain in his later years, turned out to be excessively," his family added.
Courtney's death is a reminder of the challenges faced by people who try to leave a life of crime behind. It is also a reminder of the importance of mental health support.
